Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these medications should be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
