Coaching a Baby to Become an 'English Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Investment?

Child education concept
The company responsible for the advert explains that what seems like "luxury or peculiarity" is actually "deliberate commitment in early learning".

"A family residing in north London wants to find an extraordinary and qualified tutor to guide their youngest child on his early path to becoming an British gentleman."

Looking at this post, you might naturally skip the wording "first-steps" as simple a turn of phrase.

But, it might be the most important aspect of this unusual employment listing, as it attempts to find a tutor for a one-year-old.

Many of applications have already been received since the anonymous family posted their search for the £180,000 per year tutor, who must be "a uniquely qualified person".

Over the last few weeks, the post has attracted interest throughout the media, with several asking why?

Innovative Idea

The CEO, CEO and founder of an education consultancy, which is assisting the family in their hunt, stated that notwithstanding early scepticism, he found the idea "far sighted", and "advanced".

When he met the family, he mentioned they recognized the unconventional aspect of their demand, and how young their son is.

However, they explained that they "didn't want to wait any longer" to engage a tutor, as they had postponed until their older child was five, and by that stage "cultural influence had by then taken hold".

But what did the family indicate by "cultural predisposition"?

It's "comprehensive", Adam answered. "The way you eat, the manner you speak".

He stated the firstborn had adopted "extremely delicate, unspoken signals" from the family, and had adopted their cultural ways. The family informed him they hoped to prevent the same situation to happen again with their new baby.

The intention: To hire a UK tutor, who must speak with RP, to influence the baby from day one.

Tutoring discussion
Tutors International state the advert has started a larger conversation about how parents view learning, elitism and the role of family background in education.

Osmotic Learning

"A lot of the learning at the beginning here is kind of absorbed naturally," said the CEO.

It's via this osmosis that the family are hoping the child will acquire the UK customs they wish to cultivate.

He noted the tutor had to be an individual who studied at "the right kinds of schools – similar types of schools as the family aspire to send their son to".

"The tutor simply needs to be the appropriate candidate, they'll be carrying out things they don't even know they're doing, effortlessly," he commented.

Expense Not a Factor

The family told the expert the selected educator should ideally also have familiarity of or passion in equestrian activities, alpine skiing, the arts and instrumental training so as to inspire the child in a wide range of interests.

Furthermore though, he said the family desired the tutor to sign up the child on a range of classes so the child would be "equestrian training and starting an tool by the time they are around three years old".

In the family's view, assisting their son become a "UK sophisticate" will bring about accomplishment and create opportunities.

"Taking into account the pros and cons of that, because it's undoubtedly a social class indicator," he notes.

Yet, notwithstanding all this guidance in "Britishness", would the child adopt what is termed cultural bias from the multicultural family he resides with regardless?

"Certainly", replied he. "The parents realize this could fail, but they've merely embraced the view of, 'we should try and we should start as soon as we can', because the price of it is not relevant," he explained.

Impractical

A number of in the education sector who share these concerns.

Another CEO, CEO and founder of Blue Education, who supplies individual instructors, wrote that "the process of embracing two identities, or indeed, becoming oneself, is something that must be lived into, not designed."

The expert explained that he had relocated from Asia to the Britain at the time of childhood, and had been raised knowing and living both cultures. He progressed to study at a prestigious UK institution.

Peter Cui portrait
Peter Cui was the pioneer originating from mainland China to be selected to the role of Treasurer of the university debating society.

"The notion that an individual can serve as a representation of UK identity, someone who can in some way transplant the characteristics of a UK sophisticate upon a 12-month-old child, seems to me idealistic and impractical," he wrote.

"From my perspective, having a quintessentially British tutor from babyhood will not instantly produce the goal they desire.

"I did not have such a figure, and yet I have been privileged enough to experience numerous of the situations they hope for their son."

He added: "The reality is, cultural identity should not be imposed from the outside influences; it must be selected, and it must come from within."

Acquiring Englishness

Naturally, English culture is something Adam thinks can be educated – and marketed.

"I believe the situation that the world views us in this respect is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
